Mental Age vs Real Age: What's the Difference?
Mental age is a concept from developmental psychology that measures an individual's cognitive ability relative to average abilities at a given chronological age.
Unlike your real (chronological) age — which counts time since birth — mental age is assessed through cognitive tests measuring reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and language skills.
A person whose mental age is higher than their chronological age is considered advanced for their years. A lower mental age may indicate developmental delays or cognitive decline.
The ratio of mental age to chronological age was historically used to calculate IQ: (Mental Age / Chronological Age) × 100. Modern IQ tests use more sophisticated scoring, but the mental age concept remains useful.
While mental age gives insight into cognitive development, it doesn't measure wisdom, emotional intelligence, or life experience — which only your real chronological age can reflect.
