The Science of Aging: Why Do We Age Biologically?

Aging is a complex biological process driven by the gradual accumulation of cellular damage over time. Scientists have identified nine hallmarks of aging, including genomic instability, telomere attrition, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Telomeres — the protective caps at the ends of your chromosomes — shorten each time a cell divides. When they become too short, cells stop dividing and enter a state called senescence. This is a key driver of age-related decline.

Other factors include oxidative stress from free radicals, loss of protein homeostasis (proteostasis), impaired nutrient sensing, stem cell exhaustion, and altered intercellular communication.

Research into anti-aging therapies focuses on slowing these processes through caloric restriction, senolytic drugs that clear senescent cells, and lifestyle interventions like exercise and sleep optimization.
